Salt water tidal rapids at Skookumchuck Narrows Provincial Park
Skookumchuck is the combination of two Sechelt Native words skookum for strong and chuck for waters The narrows are the only access to Sechelt Inlet from Jervis Inlet and the tidal currents can reach 30 km or 18 miles per hour The water levels between the two sides can exceed two metres and on a ten foot or three metre tide 200 billion gallons of water pass through this narrow channel While calm at slack tide at other times the waves create cavernous whirlpools that have destroyed boats and claimed lives
