A Genoese crossbowman winding up, or bending his crossbow. They were a famous military corps of the Middle Ages, which acted both in defence of the Republic of Genoa, and as mercenaries for other Italian or European powers. They took the defeated French side in the Battle of Crecy during the 100 Years War.
