Mary River, Gympie, c 1897. The river was traditionally named Moocooboola by the Kabi people. The river was named Wide Bay River on 10 May 1842 by explorers Andrew Petrie and Henry Russell. The official name was changed on 8 September 1847 to the Mary River after Lady Mary Lennox, wife of Governor Charles FitzRoy.
