Believed to be haunted by ghosts, the Winchester Mystery House is a sprawling Victorian mansion that attracts tourists to San Jose, California, USA. Sarah Winchester, wealthy heir to the famous gun company, began its construction in 1884 to appease the spirits of persons reportedly killed by Winchester rifles. She continued building her rambling personal residence in a haphazard manner for 38 years. Among the oddities of this 161-room residence are stairs that lead to the ceiling, and doors that open onto walls or go nowhere (as seen in this photo).
