HE Octagon House, atthe corner of New YorkAvenue and 18th Street,\Vashington, D. C,erected by Col. JohnTay-loe, was commenced in1798 and completed in1800. During the process of its erection,General Washington often visited the build-ing. He took a lively interest in the house,it being the home of his friend, as wellas one of the finest residences in thecountry at the time. After the year 1814,the British having burned the White House,President James Madison occupied the man and keeping many fine running building and walls conform to thestreet lines, showing that the streets wereaccurately laid off even at that early interior is elaborately finished, thedoors of the first story being of are still in an excellent state of pres-ervation. All the work in the circularvestibule coincides with the circumferenceof the tower, the doors, sash and glassbeing made on the circle and all are still inworking order.
