A view of a pair of olinders andframes just unwheeled is shown in Fig. 1. Freijuently theframes were sent to the smith shop for repairs, and in theirreapplication or in the application of new ones, the squaringgage, Fig. 2, was used. The purpose of this gage was toassist in squaring the frames with the cylinders and witheach other, and to check for frame distortions. It may be explained that frames on the smaller Frenchlocomotives are of the slab type about P 2 in. thick andthe driving box shoes are bolted to the frame jaws by asuitable number of taper l)olts as indicated in Fig. o. Thedriving box wedges are provided with tongues which fit into. Fig. 1. The above arrange-ment of the shoe and wedge also is shown in Fig. .v When a locomotive was ready to be reassembled, theframes were bolted to the cylinders and the braces bolted cylinders and frames were adjusted by means of jacksuntil level, as indicated i)y the spirit level. .\ string passedfrom the center of the cylinder to the rear of the frame wasadjusted until exactly in the jjrolongation of the center lineof the cylinder, and any offset in the frame could be detectedby measuring the dis^tance between the frame and the there was a slight offset at the rear, due to a bend in theframe, the frame was left alone and bent back into positionafter putting the boiler in place.
