The flowers are not especiallyshowy, white, single, axillary, rarely intwos. The fruit, which is botanically aberry, is green at first, changing to brightred on ripening. It varies in size andform. The remote history of Red Pepper issomewhat obscure. The plant was pre-sumably known to Theophrastus, yet thefact that Red Pepper did not becomegenerally known in Europe until afterthe discovery of America has led to thesupposition that it is a native ofAmerica.
