In 1866 Rear-Admiral Dahlgren was ordered to the command of theSouth Pacific Squadron. On returning from that ser-vice, in 1868, he was for the second time appointed chiefof the Bureau of Ordnance. In the fall of 1869 he wasrelieved from the charge of that bureau at his ownrequest, and ordered to the command of the WashingtonNavy-Yard, where he died in 1S70. n6 OFFICERS OF THE ARMY AND NAVY {regular). COMMANDER WM. STARR DANA, (deceased). Commander Wiiliam Starr Dana was born in NewYork April, 1843; and was the son of Richard P. Dana,winisc ancestor Richard came from England to Massa-chusetts in 1640. Many of the members of the familyhave since been well known in the literary and scientificworld. Commander Dana entered the Naval Academy in1859, ami graduated in [863, becoming an ensign in thesame year. After a short service in the North AtlanticSquadron, he was ordered to the West Gulf attached to the flag-ship Hartford at the battleof Mobile Bay, and participated in all the events,—thetaking ol Forts Morgan, Gaines; and Powell and otheroperations of that epoch of the Civil War. lie wasof those who received the thanks of Admiral Far-it ; and was included in the thanks of Congre votedto the officers, seamen, and marines of the fleet, for theunsurpassed gallantry and skill exhibited by them in theenga
