We are having trouble with our cu cumbers in the greenhouse. We have no bees to pollinate; we do it by hand. However, there are not enough cucum bers coming on. What is the right way to pollinate by handf H. K.—^Wis. Fertilization, or pollination, of cucum bers and other plants, is effected by taking the pollen masses which are pro- duced on the stamen of the male bios soms—those to which are attached im fruits—and placing these in contact with the pistil of the female, or fruit- producing flower. When the pollen masses touch the stigma or pistil of a flower which is "ripe" or is properly developed to receive it, the grains of pollen germinate in the sugary excretion of the stigma and thus effect fertiliza- tion. Fertilization is effected in a variety of ways. Winds are the best dissemina- tors of pollen. Insects come next. Arti- ficial pollination may be effected by shaking the plants about noon on clear days, thus causing the pollen masses to be scattered; or by means of bees, which are invaluable where cucumbers need fertilization, or by hand. To fertilize by hand, you can take a male flower, or flowers, remove the flower portion and touch the center or pistil of the fema
