C?X <*^; -^-^L.^^ SXIMNEB, Charles, U. S. senator, was bom inBoston, Jan. 6, 1811. His ancestor, William Sum-ner, settled at Dorchester, Mass., in 1635. He waseducated at the Boston Latin school, and at Harvard,graduating from the college in 1830, and from thelaw school in 1833. The next year he was admittedto the bar, and formed a partnership with 6. , but his chief laurels were to be won in otherfields. From December,1837, to May, 1840, he wasin France, England, Italy,and Germany, continuinghis studies, and meetingalmost every person ofnote. Independent in for-tune as in mind, he gavehis attention to large sub-jects, and made no hasteto be famous. His editionof Veseys Equity Re-ports, begun in 1844, wasinterrupted by illness, buthis work includes vols. 1to 4, 6, and 13 to 30. Hisfirst public appearance ofnote, and the real com-mencement of his publiclife, was as city oratorof Boston, July 4, 1845;this address on TheTnieGrandeur of Nations,caused a sensation by d
