Semi-human, long-tailed demons suck fruit while sitting, shackled at the waist, near the base of the Torre Pendente or Leaning Tower of Pisa, on the Campo dei Miracoli (Field of Miracles) at Pisa, Tuscany, Italy. This striking Pisan Romanesque artwork, sculpted in the 12th century, also features a grotesque head gripping the chain binding the demons together in its curved beak.
Pisa, Tuscany, Italy: this superbly expressive medieval sculpture of a pair of shackled demons is easily visible from ground level on the lowest, late-12th century stage of the ‘Leaning Tower of Pisa’, the Torre Pendente campanile or bell tower of the Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta, the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption on the Piazza or Campo dei Miracoli (Field of Miracles). The long-tailed, semi-human demons, sculpted in the distinctive Pisan Romanesque style, interrupt the ring of Corinthian capitals enriching the blind arcade of engaged columns around the tilted tower. They sit shackled at the waist, feeding on fruit, with the chain linking them together held by a beaked monster or beakhead.
