Gherkin


London Panorama, October 2013. After the storms and strong winds of the previous days cleared the atmospheric haze over London a new view of the constantly changing London sykline showing 'The Shard London Bridge' was photographed from Toot Hill, 20 miles away in north Essex, England. The Shard London Bridge by Architect Renzo Piano is the tallest building in the European Union at 310m ( 1017 ft ). Left to Right: To the left of the Shard is the 148m high Strata Tower known as the 'Razor' with it's three roof top turbines which generate 10% of the buildings power requirements in the Elephant and Castle district of South London. Between the Shard and the 'Razor' is Guy's Hospital designed by Watkins Gray and completed in 1974 and at 146m ( 494 ft ) is the tallest hospital in the world. To the right of The Shard is 20 Fenchurch Street is a commercial skyscraper on Fenchurch Street in central London. It has been nicknamed The Walkie-Talkie and The Pint because of its distinctive shape. Upon completion in 2014 the building will be 160 m (525 ft) tall with 37 storeys. Just behind the Walkie-Talkie is 30 St Mary Axe formerly as the Swiss Re Building and also known as the Gherkin ( 2003 ). The Gherkin is 180m (591ft ) high and was designed by Sir Norman Foster. To the right of the Gerkin is the 230m (755ft ) high Heron Tower ( designed by Architects Kohn Pederson Fox and completed in 2011 ) which including the 28m ( 92ft ) mast is the tallest building in the City of London. To the right is the 1981 Richard Seifert designed Tower 42, formerly the Nat West Tower which stands at 183m ( 600ft ) high. On the far right can be seen the London Eye and the Big Ben tower in Westminster.
