The writer has frequentlyseen the gland in the region of the ear affected, more rarely the glandsof the lower jaw, and, least of all, the glands of the eye. Etiology.—This disease is rather rare in the dog, but sometimes itmay take the form of an epizootic (Hertwig, Schussele). In these cases itis probably due to some infecting virus that gets into the gland throughStenos duct. The exact nature and time of incubation of this diseaseare not known. 44 DISEASES OF THE DIGESTIVE APPARATUS Symptoms.—The disease begins with a swelling of the gland andthe adjacent structures on one side or both sides of the ear.
