Synaptic endorphins. Artwork showing the release (top) of neurotransmitters called endorphins (yellow) from the end of a nerve (blue). The endorphins are released at the synapse (the junction between two nerves) and cross the synaptic gap. At the other nerve, they are taken up by receptors (cup-shaped). It is the release and uptake of endorphins that leads to natural pain relief within the body. It can also lead to feelings of well-being, such as 'runner's high'.
