With the coming of Frontenac, as governor,French adventure again plumed its wing, and led by La Salle, ex-tended the domain of France westward to the Mississippi and south-ward to the Gulf of Mexico. But brief was the respite from war andIndian turbulence. While Frontenac was at the head of the ad-ministration, the Indian enemies of France were kept in subjectionand had a wholesome fear of his name. But broke outin the colony, by a conflict of authority, and Frontenac wasfor a time recalled to France. He was succeeded first by M. de laBarre, and afterwards by the Marquis de Denonville, the latter ofwhom, by an act of perfidy, coupled with the invasion of the Senecacountry, roused the Iroquo
