Boiler Connections. Smalljobs frequently have no stopvalves at the boiler. In thecase of larger ones, or wherethere are two boilers, valvesin the supply mains must al-ways be accompanied w i t hcheck valves in the returns;otherwise, in case a stop valvein the main steam line isclosed, the water will bebacked out of the main returnsat the boiler, by the pressure. Should the water partially leave theboiler in this manner and then suddenly return, the water coming incontact with the heated sections will crack them. A stop valve should be placed between the boiler and the checkvalve in the return. A typical arrangement of return, etc., is shown. - Check Valvel/Ya/n return in duct Fig. 8. Typical Arrangement of Return,Showing Check Valve. 230 STEAM AND HOT WATER FITTING in Fig. s- It is convenient to have an independent drain connectionfrom the returns to provide for drawing off the water in the systemwithout emptying the water from the boiler. The latter, of conha- its independent blow-off cock. The water supply to the boilershould be controlled by a lock-shield valve or a cock that cannot betampered with by any person not in charge. Boilers having eightsections or more, as a rule, have two or more steam outlets, thus re-ducing the likelihood of the boiler priming or making wet steam, since, with a single outlet, the velocity of steam through it may be so greatthat the water is picked up and carried into the piping system.
