In 1775 he was a member of the second Con-tinental Congress, and in December of the same year, wasappointed brigadier-general of militia; later he held the samerank in the Continental Army. Governor of New York from1777 to 1795 and from 1801 to 1804. Fourth vice-presidentof the United States, 1805.
