Archway and steps in Santo Stefano di Sessanio, a hill town in the province of L'Aquila in the Abruzzo region of southern Italy. Located on the edge of the Campo Imperatore plain in the Gran Sasso National Park, the area suffered from extreme poverty leading to mass emigration in the mid-19th century and Santo Stefano fell into disrepair. However an exhaustive restoration project on the village in the 1970s, led to a turnaround in Santo Stefano’s fortunes, with original building materials and parts being used in the rebuilding.
