An vintage photograph of the 1888 eviction of an Irish family in in Moyasta, County Clare, after a battering ram was used. Landlords whose land was crowded with poorer tenants were now faced with large rates bills and many began clearing the poor tenants from their small plots. The great mass of evictions came in the 1840s, and when the police began to keep a count, they recorded a total of almost 250,000 persons as officially evicted between 1849 and 1854. Evictions continued through to the 1890s.
