WILBUR P. THIRKIELD, One of the corresponding secretaries of the Freedmens Aid and Southern Education Society, 1900-. Annual Conferences of 1866 and 1867, and received generalapprobation. The Church papers gave wide publicity to thepurposes of the society, and in every possible way cooperatedwith its officers. On April 25, 1868, the board placed the society at the dis-posal of the General Conference, which body in May of thatyear indorsed the organization and its objects and commended 1098 American Methodism it to the support of the Church. Rev. R. S. Rust was electedcorresponding secretary and thenceforth devoted his life tothe highest welfare of the colored people of the Church andof the nation. In 1880 the scope of the society was enlarged to includework among the poor white people of the South, and thus itwas brought more than ever in harmony with the purposesof
