To increase or decrease thespeed it is only necessary further to turn this same control-wheel to left or right. This is effected, without disengaging the clutch, by ha\-inga parallel portion on the clutch so that the disengagement onlytakes place when the wheel has been turned sufficiently far forthat purpose. The control of the speed by the handwheel shown is effectedby a cam on the handwheel which controls a horizontal shaft. The i-cylinder 180/200 4 M 4 type British Kromhout Marine Oil Engine. The engine illustrated in the photograph is of the 4-cylindertype, developing 200 when running at 320 This engine is one of three sets sup])lied to the Anglo-PersianOil Company for installation in oil tankers buUt by J. SamuelWhite & Co. Limited, of Cowes, and it is controlled bythe handwheels shown at the after end, there being no otherlevers or control-wheels. This motor is non-reversible, but isfitted with the special Kromhout reverse gear which hasgiven satisfaction for many years past. Starting is effected by means of compressed air, at a pressureof about 200 lb. per aq. in., carried in reservoirs which arecharged from the engine itself when running. The engineis started and runs slowly with the clutch it is necessary to get the vessel under weigh, bya turn of the control-wheel the engine is speeded up, andby the same motion the clutch, which is connected with running the who
