In the design care was taken toprovide ample sectional area over the bolster and extremestiffness between the bolster and the draft gear. The section extending over the bolster is made of a 5^ plate 26 in. wide at the bolster and tapering behindthe draft lugs to a width of 19 in. Two 8-in., are riveted to this plate, with the flanges turnedoutward. The draft lug castings, for double spring gearare riveted to the backs of the channels.
