Japan: Tokugawa Ieshige (28 January 1712 - 13 July 1761), ninth ruler of the Tokugawa Shogunate (r. 1751-1760). Hanging scroll painting by Kano Terunobu (1717-1763), 18th century. Tokugawa Ieshige, born Nagatomi-maru, was the ninth shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate and the first son of Tokugawa Yoshimune. He was controversially made shogun in 1745 after his father abdicated to become 'Ogosho' ('retired shogun'), and would only rule on his own after his father's death in 1751. He suffered from constant ill health throughout his life, and had a severe speech defect.
