Mars in 1909, stereoscopic card. These are paired stereoscopic images which provide a 3D image (stereogram) when viewed side-by-side. Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun. It was at a distance of 77 million kilometres from the Earth at the time of this observation. Closer and more detailed observations of Mars were not made until spacecraft visited the planet in the 1960s. Image obtained on 28 September 1909, by US astronomer Edward Emerson Barnard (1857-1923) at the Yerkes Observatory, Chicago, USA, with the 40-inch telescope. Published by the Keystone View Company.
