STS-71 mission insignia. Illustration of the mission insignia used on the crew patch for the STS-71 space mission. STS-71 was launched on 27th June 1995. It was the third mission of the joint US/Russian Shuttle-Mir program and the first Space Shuttle mission to dock with the Russian Mir space station. Two Russian cosmonauts, the crew for Mission Mir-19, were carried to the space station. Two cosmonauts already there were carried back to Earth on the Shuttle, having been launched to Mir by a Soyuz rocket. US astronaut Norm Thagard was also a member of the returning Mir crew. Atlantis spent almost a week docked with Mir, before landing on 7th July 1995.
