Four railway viaducts cross the Castlefield Canal Basin. The 1849 Manchester South Junction, 1877 Cornbrook and 1894 Great Northern Viaducts are near each other, out of sight to the left of the shot. Separate from the others is the red brick 1848-49 Salford Branch Viaduct, seen here, which carries main line trains over the basin from Deansgate Station. Portrait shot looking north from the Castlefield Youth Hostel, standing on the far bank of the canal basin. The barge in the foreground is a houseboat.
