His nameis inscribed, over the figure, in hieroglyphics. Amongthe captives is ReJiohoam, with the Jewish expressionof countenance and form; and the inscription isJouDAHA Melek—King of the Jews. * 2 Cliron. xii. 9. 302. With regard to the figure of Rehoboam, it does notappear to me that the locality where it was foundwould by any means invalidate the mass of other evi-dence that seems so confirmatory of the fact. Thename on the cartouche is legible; and the Lionthereon pourtrayed, seems very remarkable. Thelion of the tribe of Judah/ the ensign and symbol ofthe tribe; and I am not aware that I have ever seen asimilar symbol on any other cartouche. It is quitetrue sacred history is silent on the question, as towhether Rehoboam was carried captive into Egypt;and it is probable he was not. Among the spoilswere the treasures of the temple, and of the kingshouse, including the shields of gold, which Solomonhad made. The countenance and the garb are thoseof the Jew, and the inscription on the cartouche isJeoud Hamelek ; Jeoiid, the Hebrew word forJuDAH, and HameleJc, the King. It is quite pro- 3
