Checkered Garter Snake (Thamnophis marcianus marcianus). Sloughing. Using hollow tree outer bark to peel off, remove, old skin.

Checkered Garter Snake (Thamnophis marcianus marcianus). Sloughing. Using a hollow tree branch and outer bark to rub off and remove current epidermal layer and revealing a sparkling new clean one, and allowing for more growth. Shed slough is peeled off, inside out, rather like a person pealing off a sock from a foot.
