Long Ship with 50 oars from mosaic found near Pozzuoli. Roman warships (naves longae) derived from Greek galley designs. In the ocean-going fleets, the three main designs were trireme, quadrireme, and quinquereme. During the Republic, the quinquereme was the standard ship. After the battle of Actium at the start of the Empire, the trireme became the main ship. Pozzuoli was an ancient seaside town probably best known for its bradyseism, a raising and lowering of the Earth’s surface due to underground volcanic activity.
