Display for Ensisheim meteorite of 1492. Reproduction of a postcard showing a display of the remains of the Ensisheim meteorite of 1492. This meteorite fell near the villages of Ensisheim and Battenheim, then in Germany, now in the Alsace region of north-eastern France. It is the oldest meteorite whose fall can be dated precisely, to noon on 7 November 1492. The arrival of the meteorite as a meteor was preceded by a loud explosion followed by an impact that formed a 1-metre deep crater in a wheat field. The remains of the meteorite were later put on display in the main hall of Ensisheim's Regency Palace.
