Similar features 24 370 ARCHITECTURE OF THE ROMANIC are displayed in the Church of S. Adrian in Tuflon in Asturias {Fig. 225), the age ofwhich is less certain-ly known. The planwas generally a sim-ple rectangle, withoutapses, the three aislesof the early Christianbasilica being at timesexchanged for the cru-ciform arrangement ofByzantine edifices. If the identificationof certain remains inAsturias, Galicia, andLeon by Spanish ar-chaeologists may betrusted, it would ap-pear that some at-tempts to developa more independentstyle, especially inthe decorative details,were made under theenergetic kings Rami-ro I., 843 to 850,and Alfonso III., to 910. Amongthe memorials of theserulers may be men-tioned the Church ofS. Miguel of Linio inAsturias, of Byzantinecruciform plan, withbarrel-vaults, the col-umns of which areprovided with bases of barbarous design, and display no trace of
