Hodgson were in-structed by a member of the Beaumont familyto sell a small library from the north of England,consisting mainly of old topographical and anti-quarian books. The binding of one of thevolumes, which was packed amongst a numberof books of small value and with no regard forits interest or worth (for the owner was entirelyunaware that he possessed so remarkable avolume), excited the curiosity of the the book had been badly muti-lated and many leaves abstracted, and identifica-tion was thus made extremely difficult.
