Unreacted Benedict's reagent
Benedict's reagent is a solution of copper (II) sulphate (CuSO4), tartaric acid and sodium hydroxide. It is used in the Benedict's test to detect sugars, and turns an orange colour when sugar is present. This is due to a precipitate that forms when the copper sulphate is reduced to insoluble orange copper (I) oxide by certain sugars. Certain sugars do not provide this result, such as sucrose.
