The relic- TOPES AND CIIAITYAS. 319 casket lay in a shrine in form resembling a stupa, with a socle andcupola having rich outlines, and a top ornamented with four um-brellas, one above another. Tlie topes in Afghanistan resemble thetomb-towers of Syiia, for the socle is elevated, and the dome doesnot rise high above a sort of drum adorned with friezes. The mostremarkable of these topes in Kabul is situated near Jamalgiri, northof Peshawar. Around its circumference are figures of Buddlia inthe usual seated position, ^\dth legs crossed under him, betweenCorinthian pilasters; other parts of the edifice are Grecian.
