FINAL STAGES OF THE SICILIAN CAMPAIGN - During their advance on Messina the 8th Army had to overcome great hindrance in the form of demolitions. The Germans blew up roads, cut down trees, did everything to hold up our advance. Here, near Taomina, they destroyed two bridges over the fast flowing river Alcantara. The diversion had to be made through minefields and the engineers built a bridge in one morning. Picture shows artillery being towed over the bridge, British Army
