Phnom Bakheng Temple. Sunrise. Phnom Bakheng is one of the 4 hills, which is outstanding the Angkor area. King Yasovarman I. built a temple on top of each hill. Phnom Bakheng is in the southwest of Angkor – whereat Phnom means little hill. Phnom Bakheng is a favoured place to see the sunset. From there you have a fantastic view to the hinterland, the city Siem REap, Angkor Wat in between of the jungle, the Tonle Sap sea and the western Baray. You arrive the top of the hill within 20 minutes to admire the view. Who will not walk by himself can rent an elephant. For 15 US$ they bring you up to the hill and for 10 US$ they bring you down. They start before sunset at 4pm. It is good to be early, because there are only a couple of people allowed to stay on the top of Phnom Bakheng. We tried it differen, because we thought, that where a sunset is, also a sunrise must be. So our Tuk Tuk driver brought us to a dark place, where no other people were seen. Just saying the words: “This is Phnom Bakheng.” Now we stood in front of the hill, not really looking trustful in the morning light and we started to walk up courageously. Even this was new adventure. The way was easy to walk – even the elephants walk here in the afternoon – and we were all alone by ourself. Attended by the noises of the jungle, without any sign of civilization.
