Forhis meritorious services in this campaignhe was promoted to the rank of captainof Company M. SAN FRANCISCO FIREMEN It was formerly Hose No. 7, and wasorganized in February, 1879, as a hosecompany, and transformed into EngineNo. 16. It has been engaged in all thebig fires of the Potrero and South SanFrancisco of the last twenty years. The. CAPT. CHAS. J. HOGAN company stands well in the departmentfor its efficiency, and is well representedby a capable body of firemen. At thebig fire at the Potrero about eleven yearsago, when two entire blocks were sweptaway, Engine No. 16 was the first com-pany on the ground, and had for sometime to bear the entire burden of battlingwith the fierce flames that were con-suming the inflammable wooden build-ings. At this fire a former foreman ofthis company, Patrick McCormack, savedthe life of a man named John Kennedy,who was taken from one of the burningbuildings. The company was well to thefore at the Brannan street fire, and didits share towards staying the furtherspread of that disastrous the Baldwin Hotel fire Engine No. 16worked seven hours, and maintained its reputation for efficiency. The membersof the company, other than the captain,are Martin Duddy, lieutenant ; SamuelKainey, engineer ; M. E.
