Scabies mite (Sarcoptes scabiei canis). Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of a canine scabies mite, showing its mouthparts (centre). This mite reaches a length of between and millimetres. The female burrows into the skin and lays eggs. Infestation by this mite causes the skin condition scabies, with intense itching, particularly at night. Scratching results in the formation of scabs and sores.
