Jagged Urner Alps peaks of the Dammastock and Tieralplistock form a natural arena and a spectacular summer backdrop to the deeply fissured surface of the km ( mi) glacier, flowing at about 30 to 40 m (100 to 130 ft) per year from high snow fields to a point below the Furka Pass at an altitude of about 2,208 m (7,244 ft). The melt water forms a lake, from which a stream tumbles into the valley below to begin the River Rhône’s 813 km (505 mi) journey to the Mediterranean via southern France and the Camargue delta.
