LUNG, ANATOMY

Model of the intern anatomy of the chest of an adult human body, face on. The heart withdrawal makes visible the right and left main lung bronchi (in light blue), first branching of the aerial respiratory tract. The bronchial tree (in white), shown in the left lung, includes the main, lobar and segmental bronchi, and then the bronchioles and terminal bronchioles. The lung blood circulation is composed of the pulmonary arteries (in blue), carrying the deoxygenated blood to the alveoli, and the pulmonary veins (in red), which send back the oxygenated blood to the heart. The right lung, divided in three lobes, is depicted in frontal section; the bronchial tree and the blood vessels appear for that reason in sections. The right and left internal jugular veins (in royal blue) go down on both sides of the throat to reach the clavicles, where they join up with the subclavian veins (coming from the upper limbs) to form the brachiocephalic trunk. The latter flows into the superior vena cava (in royal blue), which brings the deoxygenated blood coming to the heart. The ascending aorta (in red) sends back the oxygenated blood to the upper part of the body; it divides first into the brachiocephalic trunk, then into the common carotid arteries, vascularizing neck and head structures.
