Marie inNovember, 1842, and there founded Notre Dame, on the right bank of the THE CROSS IN INDIANA. 34x St. Josephs River, the history and wonderful increase of this establishmentbeing noted in a separate chapter. The other community was that of the Sisters of Providence, who, in1S40, founded a convent at St. Marys in the Woods, near Terre Haute, andwhich has also had a glorious fruition. The year 1844 was a sad one. Catholicity had to endure a new and ter-rible trial. In the east the mob, led by designing men, had destroved Catho-. st. marts in the woods, churches and institutions openly; and misguided individuals had by stealthapplied the incendiary torch, almost unrebuked bv popular judgment; andnowhere had the voice of the Protestant ministry been raised to impress ontheir ignorant followers that such acts of violence against their fellow-citizenswere grievous sins. In the west the persecution took a new form. Anexemplary priest, Romain Weinzaspnein, of Evansville, Indiana, was arrestedand tried for an outrage on a married woman named Schmoll. The state-ments of the complainant were unsupported and self-contradictorv; but thejudge and jury, if thev did not investigate the whole charge, went into thecase with the clear intent of convicting the priest, and they did convict was sentenced to the penitentiary for five years.
