Vitamin C crystals, polarised light micrograph. Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is an essential vitamin that is found in fruit and green vegetables. The compound was first discovered in 1928 by the Hungarian biochemist, Dr. Albert Szent-Gyorgi. Vitamin C is required for the growth and maintenance of bones, teeth, skin and blood vessels. It also plays an important role in the function of the brain by aiding in the manufacturing of the neurotransmitter norepinephrine. It is also a powerful antioxidant that protects the health and integrity of cells. Deficiency in vitamin C leads to scurvy, which causes bleeding gums and anaemia.
