Colourful Section of Brickwork in an Old Railway Bridge on the Tarka Trail showing Colour Contrast of Green Algae and Victorian Red Bricks #2.
The Brickwork beneath this small farm bridge is very colourful. There is a contrast between the original Victorian brick work and the bright green algae colonising it. The paler green is a powdery lichen and there is a small amount of percolated lime. This bridge is situated below Great Torrington Railway station and the Puffing Billy restaurant on the Tarka Trail, which follows the River Torridge to Bideford and continues inland to Barnstaple. This line was originally built by the North Devon Railway, it opened on 18 July 1872, was operated by the London and South Western Railway. After the passenger service closed, the line was still used to carry clay from the large quarry outside Merton to the port of Bideford until 1982.
