Upon probe contact with the seafloor, the firing ring is moved upward, engaging the trigger arm of the S/A and releasing the firing pin. The S/A has a hydrostatic lock that prevents firing above a water depth of 10 to 12 feet (3 to 4m). The cartridge assembly consists of an aluminum or steel cartridge base that is epoxied to a phenolic cartridge case to form the propellant container.
