The end wagons should be loaded ones, and all must have the brakes set. Picket lines will be stretchedwith tackle if any is at hand; otherwise, by the following method:Attach the rope at one end and lead it through all the supports orfastenings; about 15 feet from the other end make a bowline inthe rope, pass the end around or through the end fastening andback through the bowline. By hauling on the end of the rope thenecessary strain may be set on the line, the bowline acting as block. The end stakes of a high line should incline outwardslightly. The picket line should be ditched if it is to be used forsome time, and if rain threatens it should be ditched even for a. GROUND PICKET LINE. bivouac. The only exception is when the line is on a ridge andthe ground slopes from it in both directions. Open a ditch on thehigh side about 3 yards from the line. If the ground slopes alongthe line, the ditch will be parallel to it, and will have an outletat the lower end; otherwise, the ditch must be farther uphill atthe middle,, and will have an outlet at each end. This drainageshould be kept in mind in locating the line. Stable Duties.—The prime requisites in stabling mules arefree circulation of air without drafts, equable temperature, dry-ness, and cleanliness. Grain is fed at reveille by the stable order-lies. When the animals have finished eating, those to be usedare harnessed and hitched up. The rest are turned into the corralor tied at the picket line. The stable police then fork all clean 612 MILITARY TRAINING and dry bedding to the head of the stall and work the rest of themanure into piles ready for loading.
