Galapagos and South American lizards, 19th-century illustration. At top is the Floreana lava lizard (Microlophus grayii) from the Galapagos island of Floreana. At bottom is a Phymaturus lizard from the Andean regions of South America. The older binomial names of Leiocephalus grayii and Centrura flagellifer are given here. This page of illustrations is Plate 14 from the 1843 volume on reptiles ('Part V: Reptiles') that forms part of the multi-volume work 'The Zoology of the Voyage of HMS Beagle'. This work described the animals collected and observed by the British naturalist Charles Darwin during the survey voyage of HMS Beagle during the years 1832 to 1836. This expedition established Darwin's reputation as a naturalist. 'The Zoology of the Voyage of HMS Beagle' was edited by Darwin and published between 1838 and 1843. The volume on reptiles was written by British naturalist Thomas Bell. The artist is named here as Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins.
