The Boston Stump, Boston, Lincolnshire, seen from the west along the North Forty Foot Drain.
The Boston Stump is the name given to the tower of St Boltolph's church in Boston, Lincolnshire. The church was built in the early part of the 14th century at the height of Boston's significance as a port which was based substantially on wool exports and its trading connection with the Hanseatic League. Construction of the Stump however was not begun until 1450 and was completed between 1510 and 1520. At 83m high, it can be seen from long distances across the flat surrounding landscape known as The Fens and has served as a navigation aid for mariners approaching the port across The Wash.
