It did not seem to me to beas numerous in the places it frecjuented as were its rela-tives in their habitats, and in certain portions of MontanaI have rarely met with it, but in other sections, as in theBig Horn Mountains, it is common. Its habits do notdiffer from those of the Dusky or Sooty Grouse, and thedescription of these already given will sufftce for this birdas well. Geographical Distribution.—Eastern slopes of Rocky Moun-tains, from Northern Wyoming, and Southeastern Idaho to theLiard River, latitude 61 in British North America. Adult Male.—In general coloration this race resembles theD. obscurus, or Dusky Grouse, but has a differently shaped tail,which is much more square, and without any distinct terminalgray band, merely an edging of pale brown; the feathers alsoare much broader than those of the other two forms. In dimen-sions there is little, if any, difference. Adult Female.—A specimen of this sex, which belonged to mycollection, and is now contained in the American Museum ofNatural History, number 2901, while resembling closely thefemale of the Dusky Grouse on the upper parts, presents certaindiffei-ences beneath :
