An old copper mine, once the biggest in the world, now a tourist attraction

Parys Mountain. Copper and other minerals have been mined here since before the Romans. The heyday of mining here was in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Much of the ore was extracted using hand tools, this brought employment to the area. The copper was used to sheath the ships of the Royal Navy in the Napoleonic Wars and is credited with helping to win the Battle of Trafalgar. The mine produced it's own copper coins which were legal tender throughout Britain. The quarry face is stained with copper and ochre (ocher) a by-product of smelting.
