Uluru or Ayers Rock in the Northern Territory, Australia, at sunset. Uluru is an inselberg, a steep-sided hill of solid rock that rises out of a plain because of the erosion of the material around it. Uluru is the largest monolith in the world, rising 348 metres from the desert floor and having a circumference of about 9 kilometres. It is made of arkosic sandstone, and appears to change colour from red to purple at sunset. Uluru has been an important spiritual and cultural site for the region's Aborigines for thousands of years, and rock paintings cover the walls of many of its caves.
